Andy Goldsworthy’s Earth Wall

About

Earth Wall was Andy Goldsworthy’s fourth installation in the Presidio, completed in 2014.

Much like his other installation Tree Fall, perhaps this piece asks viewers to think about what separates “nature” from the built environment. Goldsworthy made Earth Wall with materials found on site. The sculpture’s sphere was shaped using naturally curved eucalyptus branches. Clay taken from the courtyard (during the Officer’s Club renovation) was used to completely bury the sculpture within a wall of earth. Goldsworthy then partially dug out the sphere, evoking a sense of discovery. It hearkens to the active archaeology dig that is just nearby!

Goldsworthy’s other art:

Spire, and Wood Line, but Tree Fall is closed to the public (accurate as of 15 Aug 2022)
