This web app is a collaboration among creative historians, artists, poets, and lovers of the outdoors. We are not a tech startup, and we are not affiliated with the NPS or the Presidio Trust.

We have a deep love of this special place, the Presidio, a treasure within the city limits of San Francisco. We recharge when we get to be outdoors, and also by seeing how we walk in the footsteps of people who came before. We’d like to share that inspiration.

This site is meant to be a tool in your pocket for when you’re already here. We hope you will discover something amazing about the Presidio you didn’t know existed before.

In addition, we see an opportunity to better share stories of the Indigenous roots of this place, to talk about the real effects of Spanish colonization, and center the stories of people of color who lived here. We think a small, dedicated group of storytellers can change the narratives that get told. Come join us on this journey!

Our resident historianBarbara Berglund Sokolov, PhD

Barbara is a native San Franciscan, a scholar of California and the American West, and an award-winning historian who bridges the worlds of academic and public history. In 2013 she left her tenured faculty position because she realized how huge the appetite for history was among the general public, and that the broadest impact she could have was through public history put out into the world. From 2014–2020 she was the historian for the Presidio Trust. There she created an interpretive platform that activated historic sites to tell place-based stories, curated community-engaged exhibits, and developed smart, innovative programming for life-long learners.

Our Fearless Designerauut studio

auut (pronounced ‘OUT’) is a tiny design studio with a big heart. Based in San Francisco and founded by RJ Ramey, the studio’s mission is to design more compelling materials for high school history teachers and general museum audiences. The studio is dedicated to taking an intersectional approach and centering its work on people of color. RJ perseveres to find new creative methods for interacting with the significant political movements and historical figures of the past.

auut studio is currently the fiscal sponsor of presidio.tours.

Our Adorable MascotHumberto Moss Ignacio Nuru Godfrey Byrd

Humberto (pronounced as you would in Spanish), or Hum for short. He has a tiny heart and an enormous studio. He was born in the Presidio and still calls it home. Legend has it, his abuelita used to call him “Mi querido M.I.N.G.”

He is not our logo, because he would never sit for a desk job like that. He’s our mascot. If you are lucky, you might catch him out and about in the Presidio.
